"Happy" Texting app for car dashboard

Design challenge/case study for creating a texting app for car dashboard.

Texting app for car dashboard

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge of this project was to come up with an elegant and effective small screen design where the drivers safety while driving is of utmost importance. (Duration: 1.5 days)

THE RESULT

I learned about car dashboard designs by comparing and studying different car dashboards out there. The design proposed minimises distractions for the driver by leveraging voice commands/machine learning/natural language processing and intelligent responses to help achieve the task.

TOOLS / METHODOLOGIES

Sketch App, Persona Creation, Mind Map, Use-Model, Wireframing, Prototyping.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

1. DEFINING THE GOAL

Defining the goal

2. PERSONA

Persona

I felt putting myself in the shoes of a real user and understanding all the constraints really helped me focus on the goal here. Every driver has different needs. Here are some constraints, that I chose to solve for.

3. MIND MAP

After speaking with 4-5 drivers, quickly put together a mind map flow to understand the mental model better. Used interview and think-aloud method to gather information.

4. USE MODEL DIAGRAM

5. SAMPLE VOICE COMMANDS/HELP TEXT

Sample voice commands/help text

Detailed out the flow based on the following:

  1. Optimization: If the app is turned off, Happy will send an auto-reply.
  2. Safety: Use voice commands for input/output.
  3. Intelligent: Happy is intelligent enough to understand your response to different users and will suggest intelligent/personalized responses in the future.
